“Bit of a rebel, heel-kicking spirit here, but basically, it's delicious.” - Jancis Robinson

Our reward for banging the Alpha Box & Dice drum louder than anyone else is an exclusive allocation this, their brand new Nero d'Avola, which sold out in Australia within a couple of days. It's yet another example of the affinity these guys have with Italian grape varieties, getting right to the heart of each one and bringing out its personality without recourse to tricks or cosmetics. This has all the smooth richness of a Sicilian Nero d'Avola, thanks to the McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, which brings out the black cherry flavours associated with the variety when found in its heartland around Siracusa. There are also hints of leather, tomato and plum, which seem to be on the passport of most Italian red wines, as well as the vibrancy of ripe strawberry and a quirky gastronomic note of burnt orange. All in all a fascinating wine that threatens to improve over the next few years too. 13% alc. Drink now-2027.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin): "Lavender scented, parma violets, chalky. Victoria plums framed in lovely dry, spicy tannins. Strong caraway notes. It's a framework that owns the wine, spice over fruit, giving wiry strength and savour through the length of the palate. Bit of a rebel, heel-kicking spirit here, but basically, it's delicious. Drink 2018-2022" 17 points
