"This is a great contender for wine of the vintage!" - The Wine Advocate, 96+ points

James here, hoping to take the vacant welterweight Hubris belt: My connection with Ben Glaetzer goes back a long way (Kerpow!). In fact, I was the first member of the wine trade to introduce Ben's wines to private customers in the UK (Wham!) and after completing my WSET Diploma, for which I achieved a 'Merit' (Wallop!), I was awarded a prize for the best essay on New World wines (Bam!) and this resulted in a sponsored trip to Australia (Biff!), organised by Hardys, but while we were on the road, I persuaded my guide to let us go off-piste and pop in to see Ben and my charms must have worked (Oof!), because she agreed (Smash!). Ben greeted me like a long-lost brother (Knockout!)...

I've been told to cut it out.

In a nutshell, I'm proud to say that I've followed Ben's career with exactly the inverse interest with which he has followed mine. Amon Ra is the pinnacle of his endeavours and I love tasting its new incarnation each year. One thing never changes and that is the way it is always an unapologetically big, proud Barossa Valley red. It doesn't follow the fad for whole bunch fermentation or lighter alcohol or less oak. It is what it is and in that sense, is as 'natural' as a 11.5% alcohol, light-bodied, pale-coloured red from the Barossa is 'unnatural'. You can't turn a 300lb linebacker into a ballet dancer and nor should you play to anything other than the Barossa's strengths either. I've said my piece. Here is the astonishingly good 2014 vintage. It might be a couple of years before we see another on a par with it.

The Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple coloured, the 2014 Amon-Ra Shiraz has a youthfully mute nose, offering glimpses at the blackberry, blackcurrant and liquorice core, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, cigar boxes, fertile earth and baking spices. The full-bodied palate delivers concentrated, muscular blackberry and earth flavours with plenty of freshness and a beautiful backbone of finely grained tannins, finishing with commendable persistence and layers. This is a great contender for wine of the vintage!" 96+ points
