A truly stellar estate. Michele Reverdito just gets better and better. He has taken on Bruno Giacosa's former winemaker, Dante Scaglione, as his oenologist. He's also completely stopped using barriques (i.e. small new oak barrels), and now ages his wines in 5,000 litre botte. Unlike the weavers of Persian carpets, who always leave a deliberate mistake in every rug they make (since perfection can only ever be Allah's), Michele is determined to make that faultless wine which he can taste in his head and see in the grapes he picks, but which still eludes him. The Badarina 2011 comes from the commune of Serralunga d’Alba and is everything you could want from a Barolo; perfumed dried fruits, violets and leather lead to a palate of great structure and power. Its maturity is showing through and the wine will continue to develop and unwind over the next 5-8 years. Suited for dishes such as venison or grouse.
