“Really interesting nose! Well melded and fascinating. Fresh and ripe and beautiful. Very good value.” - Jancis Robinson MW, 17 points

Our friend, who imports this wine, said he didn’t think it was for us. We didn’t think we had a bias towards anything other than good wine, so we were a little taken aback. Had we become precious? Had developed a reputation for pernicketiness? Is pernicketiness even a word? He thought we wouldn’t lean towards the “big American, juicy style”. Well, no, when put like that, we probably wouldn’t, but we wanted to taste in anyway.

The fact that it’s now on our website is a spoiler alert in and of itself, so no need to say how pleasantly surprised we were. It’s not a wine that’s easy to pin down in flavour, because it’s a multi-vintage blend of Zinfandel (mostly), Carignan, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache, Syrah and Barbera, aged in French oak. It’s juicy, as our friend described, but only big in flavour, not in bodyweight. There’s a mellow softness from the more mature elements that give the tannins a caressing quality, so it’s a wine without brashness or youthful angularity. In fact, if I was given this blind, I’d probably place it somewhere in the south of Italy, as it’s served sunny side up, showing notes of tomato leaf, loose tea, sauteed plum and scuffed leather. We road-tested it at a BYOB Japanese robata grill in Tooting (ask for details, it’s great) and it flowed gracefully throughout the meal. All the fruit is from Bedrock’s estate, nothing is bough in, so it’s essentially a declassified estate wine with the complexities of bottle age for just £16.95. And he thought we wouldn’t like it! Screwcap. Drink now-2022.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson MW:
“This multi-vintage, multi-variety blend is made with an in-house solera system to produce consistency (and as such the cuvée will change every nine to 12 months). It is made with declassified fruit from the Bedrock vineyard. The blend is predominately Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache, Syrah and Barbera, aged in French oak. Annual production is 8,000 cases. Really interesting nose! Well melded and fascinating. So much more interesting than the average Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh and ripe and beautiful. Long. VGV. 14%. Drink now-2021.”
