In the beginning was the grape. And so it came to pass that men toiled in the field and harvested the fruit of the vine. And from that fruit they fermented red wine and there was much merriment among the people. The fruit was plentiful and the wine flowed freely. And then one day there came a consultant, who proclaimed the greatness of the site and there was again much merriment. He issued a decree that the grapes from this site were wondrous and must be preserved for the rich and not for the men of the field and there was considerably less merriment and much gnashing of teeth.

Nothing makes us gnash our teeth more than the falsely inflated price of wines and nowhere is it more evident than in Bordeaux, where ordinary wines are sold at prices that aren't remotely commensurate with their quality. So, there's great rejoicing when we find a wine like this, which could easily pass itself off as a very good claret, but is priced much more democratically.

Everything about it suggests that great care and attention to detail has been taken, from the smart, embossed label, to the quality of the fruit itself. It's a full-bodied red, packed with rich blackcurrant, mulberry and dry bark, with 'old world' hints of tobacco leaf and cedar from the oak ageing, lifted by the scent of elderflower. You would wear the soles of your boots very thin wandering around Bordeaux in search of anything close to this sort of value 14.5% alc. Drink now-2024

Press review:

Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin): “Cape bordeaux all present and correct! Ripe, dark cassis sweetness, a layer of blackcurrant leaf lifting it to freshness, super-supple tannins. Not one of the most exciting red wines ever, but if you're looking for bordeaux style with a bit of sun-ripened warmth this is Very Good Value. Drink 2017-2020” 16 points
