Chianti Classico, Quercia al Poggio, Tuscany 2013

We first met Michela Rossi, the owner of Quercia al Poggio, at an Italian wine tasting, where she had a small table with Sassicaia to the left of her and Ornellaia to the right. We found ourselves humming a certain tune by Stealers Wheel. Despite being in a Super Tuscan sandwich, her wine still managed to stand out for the sheer quality of the fruit. What’s so wonderful about this wine is the fact that it is only released when the Rossi family decide that it is ready to drink, so not only does it spend 2 years in barrel, but it is then kept back for up to 4 years in their cellar before going to market. The 2013 is the current release and it is a beauty. Satisfyingly deep and glossy, it offers the whole Tuscan shooting match. Think cherries macerated in earthenware pots, think polished leather, think plum skins steeped in kirsch and juniper, think tomato vines in the sun. This is an outrageously good Chianti Classico, jam-packed with ripe Sangiovese character and authentic local flavour. Far better than it needs to be at this price. The quality that made it stand out for us was not just the magical array of aromas and flavours, but the way it carried them in such an effortless way. It's a deliciously complex wine, but it's not weight or mass that holds the flavours together, but the purity and opulence of the fruit. You can taste a genuine sense of joy, warmth and integrity in the way it has been made – with love, but without affectation. It’s the kind of wine we really treasure, because it comes from the heart, tastes fantastic and, most importantly of all, puts a great big smile on your face! 14% alc. Drink now-2022.
