Nicolas Grosbois, the present owner and winemaker at Domaine Grosbois, took over from his father in 2008, who in turn had taken over from his father, who had taken over from his father, who had taken over from his father… you probably don’t have time to read the entire history of succession, because it goes back 600 years! His Chinon ‘Gabare’ 2017 is a stunning example of Loire Cabernet Franc at its very best, rich in dark, brooding forest fruits and smoky minerals, worth cellaring for a couple of years and then enjoying between 2020 and 2030 and possibly beyond. We have tasted a lot of older Chinons that just get better and better and this has all the architecture to keep it in shape for many years to come. Stunning! It comes from a single parcel planted on clay and limestone and the plot is farmed organically..

Decanter (Chris Kissack): “A much more convincing nose in the context of this line-up: dark fruit, concentrated black cherry compote and blackcurrant. Fresh, bright, pure, defined, ripe, grained, elegant and energetic. An excellent young Chinon, fresh composed, complete, with so much potential. Perhaps up to 12 months in bottle to help it come together a little more, otherwise this is good to go. Brilliant.” 98 points

Decanter (Jim Budd): “A sooty, smoky nose, with good concentration and structure on the palate - a powerful, early-bottles 2017. It is best kept a year or two before you can drink it.” 97 points

Decanter (Ben Llewellyn): “Concentrated black fruits, a touch of dried prune on the nose and palate. It finishes with a density that requires time to resolv, but it’s very long and quite grown-up. 13% alc. Drink 2020-2025.” 96 points
