Remember, you heard it here first. Trepat is the groovy grape of the moment, fashionable among the cognoscenti for producing wines with sinewy elegance and racy freshness. This example is a fast-flowing stream of sour cherry, red-fleshed plums and pomegranate juice, all soaked into the grooves of some nutty wood as it passes over. It’s a silky ribbon of a wine, bright and lively in the mouth, with glossy tannins that let the flavours roll.

It comes from a tiny appellation (DO) in Catalonia called Conca de Barbera, which would probably have remained anonymous for longer were it not for the fact that it is the native home of the aforementioned Trepat and as that gains wider recognition among the top sommeliers and independent retailers, so will this little region. You probably didn’t hear it here first, but if we say it enough times, you might remember it that way. You heard it here first!

NB Every June, the village of Barberà de la Conca holds the Trepat Festival in order to promote its consumption and to emphasise its importance for the region.
