A proud terroir wine that shows the naturally rich fruit concentration that a continental climate can confer, but combines it with lighter touches that give it lift, so where there's heft, there's also floral allure, herbal freshness and tannic asperity. The fruit is plush, but with a cool, mineral seam running through it, like eating a plum duff while sitting on a tombstone. That cold bedrock sensation is reminiscent of a Northern Rhone Syrah grown on granite soil, but that's where the comparisons with Europe end, because this is a self-confident Swartland wine, where everything has been done to showcase the great heritage of old vines that populate the Cape. Syrah with Mourvedre. Drink 2019-2035.
