This vin de garde is no ordinary Beaujolais. It comes from the steep, sunny slopes of Mont Brouilly, where the soil is composed of granite, volcanic rocks and blue schist, so the wine has a fine mineral seam running through it. Scientists might baulk at the use of the word ‘so’ in that previous sentence, as it implies that there’s a direct link between soil composition and the sense of ‘minerality’ in a wine, so let’s not upset them and let’s just say that it’s a complete coincidence, just as it is in Chablis and the Mosel and Tenerife and Ribeira Sacra and Cote Rotie.

The colour is deep and the aromas are young and juicy, a handful of thorny berries, all beautifully poised and balanced, but in need of time. Plenty of time. 13.5% alc. Drink 2022-2035.
