With an annual production of about 500 million bottles, Cotes-du-Rhone red isn't a wine that tends to induce panic-buying. French supermarket aisles are lined with hundreds of examples from the humdrum to the hazardous and in our experience, there are very few that actually show any ambition, because it's all too easy to trade on a well-known name, just as nepotistic children might do.

Here's one that immediately makes you sit up and take notice. The colour of a wine reveals a lot about its well-being, much like the coat of a horse, and this is dark, glossy and healthy. The aromas suggest rich, dark fruits, but there are floral and mineral top notes too, that elevate it to another level. You can taste the ambition of the producer at the first sip, because they have masterfully controlled the ripeness (note the alcohol is only 13%) and the tannins, so that you end up with a Cotes-du-Rhone that can be described as silky and elegant, yet with no shortage of depth and intensity. This is our first experience of Domaine Malmont's wines and we are mightily impressed. 13% alc. Drink now-2020.
