Envinate Lousas 'Parcela Seoane', Ribeira Sacra, Spain 2015

There's nothing quite like drinking a wine in the vineyard from which it came, surrounded by scions of the fruit that is in your glass, but it's even more exhilarating when the plot is as steep and dramatic as the 'Seoane' vineyard in the Ribeira Sacra. It's a spectacular spot and we were lucky enough to spend a magical moment perched on its vertiginous slate terraces, sharing a bottle of this elixir with winemaker, Roberto. It's like drinking silk infused with red flowers, raspberries and the purest essence of red cherry. For a wine borne of such rugged rock-hewn terrain, it's incredibly 'pretty', with a sweet inner perfume that carries with it a real sense of place. 13% alc. Drink now-2020.

Winemaking: A blend of Mencía and other local grapes from 60 year-old vines planted on broken slate, in a south-west facing parcel located at 400 metres above seal level. Grapes are foot-stomped and fermented with whole-clusters in a small open vat.

The Wine Advocate: "The vineyard that names the 2015 Lousas Parcela Seoane, a plot planted 80 years ago, is located in the Doade-Amandi zone of Ribeira Sacra on slate soils at 400 meters altitude. It felt earthier, and there is less fruit and more mineral aromas. The plot is quite warm, as it is exposed on the southwest side, and it is the first one to be harvested. Even though the wine achieved higher alcohol, it was important to work to preserve freshness. The nose transmits the slate from Amandi, and there is less fruit than in previous vintages. The palate has some dusty tannins and, again, that textured sensation of the slate, with a clean and dry, somehow austere finish. Some 1,200 bottles were filled in November 2016." 93 points
