Envinate Taganan 'Migan', Valle de la Orotava, Tenerife, Spain 2016

If you have a real interest in 'fine wines' (let's not go down that rabbit-hole here and accept it as a convenient shorthand) made outside the cosy confines of the classic regions, then this is not to be missed. It's a blend of two parcels of Listan Negro, vinified separately, from the Orotava Valley in northern Tenerife and brings something new and wonderful to the flavour wheel. Redcurrants and orange water with a dusting of white pepper and exotic spices is my best attempt. It's fragile and fine-boned, pale in colour, with featherweight tannins and an ethereal quality that evokes the lightest red Burgundies. 12.5% alc.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate: "The new red from La Orotava Valley, the 2016 Migan is pure Listán Negro pruned in cordón trenzado in the village La Perdoma, which was previously called Migan. The grapes come from two separate plots, 60% from La Habanera and the rest from San Antonio, at different altitudes and with different soils. There is an exceptional bottling of La Habanera in 2016 (see this separate review for a full description of the La Habanera plot). The San Antonio is a little older, at lower altitude and on volcanic soils with 30 to 50 centimetres of clay. The two plots fermented and aged separately, both in 6,300-litre concrete vats and with indigenous yeasts. La Habanera fermented with 100% full clusters and San Antonio with only 15% full clusters. Both were foot trodden, followed by malolactic in 228- and 600-litre oak barrels, where the wine matured for 11 months. It has the pumice, spice and dry roses of the best reds from the Orotava. It's subtle, elegant, aromatic and showy. 4,000 bottles were filled in October 2017.." 94 points

Jamie Goode: "From two vineyards at 400 and 600 m. Juicy and supple with raspberries and red cherries. Lovely purity and high acidity with some grip on the finish. Has an attractive sappy green edge." 94 points
