Envinate Taganan Tinto, Tenerife, Spain 2017

A liquid impression of time and place like no other. You can almost feel the Atlantic breeze on your face and the volcanic rock beneath your feet in this exceptional red from Tenerife. It’s Envinate’s equivalent to a ‘village’ wine from their various plots around Tenerife and is a blend of (among other things) Negramoll, Listán Negro, Listán Gacho, Tintilla, Baboso, Sumoll, Malvasía Negra and Moscatel Negro. It’s as delicate and fragile as bone china, but its pale colour and light body belie a wealth of sweet fruit and mineral notes. Think of shiny-skinned purple fruits, sweet strawberries, broken rock, rubies and perfumed silk. That’s our best shot. Now your turn. 12% alc. Drink now-2024.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate: “The 2017 Táganan Tinto is a village red from different vineyards, mostly from the Chavarria zone of Taganana on black basalt soils (but there is a small fraction from red soils). The plots fermented separately, but they blend the wines before putting them in barrels, as it matured in 228-litre oak barrels, just as it has in the last three years. This always has the telltale pumice stone, black pepper and dry rose petals of the Listán Negro grapes on volcanic soils with the freshness and saltiness from the proximity to the sea. It was very open and expressive, and they told me they have been working with carbonic gas so the wines do not feel reductive in bottle, and it also provides more precision in the wines. All in all, the best red Táganan so far. This vintage should age nicely in bottle. 6,200 bottles were filled in December 2018. Drink 2019-2026.” 94 points
