NEW! Envinate Taganan 'Parcela Margalagua', Tenerife 2014

It's a counterintuitive experience tasting a wine like this, with its silky texture and elegant contours, while thinking of the rugged vineyard from which it came, full of gnarly old vines planted high on Tenerife's dark volcanic soil. The two concepts are hard to reconcile, but it's great fun trying and only adds to the pleasure of drinking this magnificent field blend of local varieties. It's full of glossy red berries and black cherry, laced with white pepper, hillside herbs and an impression of wet stones. The minerality is striking and adds to the overall sense of purity and finesse. Not to be missed! 13% alc. Drink now-2021..

The Wine Advocate: "If the village was impressive, the one sourced from a specific plot was other worldly. The red single vineyard is the 2014 Táganan Parcela Margalagua, which like the 'village' red, is a multi-grape blend found in this ungrafted, centenary plot at 100 to 250 meters altitude; the soils are volcanic and rich in red limestone elements, and you can find a mélange of Negramoll, Listán Negro, Listán Gacho, Tintilla, Baboso (Alfrocheiro Preto), Vijariego (Sumoll), Malvasía Negra or Moscatel Negro among others. The whole clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top vats. Malolactic was spontaneous in barrique and small foudres. The wine matured in 500-litre oak foudres for 11 months. There is more depth and complexity than in the village red, a tantalizing mixture of peppers and stones, with an herbal touch, aromatic and changing in the glass. It shows great elegance and it's more insinuating. The palate has a silky texture, with great acidity and length. It ends with a strong stony sensation, marine, almost salty, terribly tasty. It's much more elegant than the village bottling. All of a sudden, it made me think of a Caíño from Rías Baixas. 1,200 bottles were filled in December 2015." 95 points
