Fixin ‘Crais de Chene’ Rene Bouvier, Burgundy 2013

Fixin is Burgundy’s best kept secret. As you head south from Dijon, it’s the village that comes just before the mighty names of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, but for some reason its fame is less renowned, which is great news for real Burgundy enthusiasts, because it means there is still some relative value to be had. As it’s less well-known than the aforementioned trio, its producers have to work harder to make a name for themselves and Rene Bouvier has crafted a stunning wine from the 'Crais de Chene' vineyard that has something of the Vosne-Romanée about it in its richly opulent aromas and jewel-bright fruit. Imagine shiny morello cherries so ripe that they crack when you bite into them, then add violets and a little kola nut. That's just our rough sketch of the aromas and flavours, but you will have your own impressions. This is one of those wines that outstrips its humble origins and we love it all the more for that reason. 13% alc. Drink now-2022
