In many ways, Beaujolais is the antithesis of the plush, full-bodied styles found in many parts of the New World, which is probably why the anti-modernist movement have hailed this region as their spiritual homeland. Wines like this, made in the traditional Beaujolais style, should carry a ‘hazard warning’ for anyone weaned on Zinfandel, because the fruit is notably sharper and more astringent, hovering at the pomegranate and redcurrant end of the spectrum, so it might make you question if it’s on the right side of the sweet-sour balance for you, which appeals to certain palates more than others. It’s more like the raspberry coulis that accompanies the chocolate fudge cake, than the chocolate fudge cake itself. It’s a classic, savoury French wine with a soft heart, so drink it with classic French dishes that need some acidity like a salade aux foies de volaille or a terrine de poulet au pistaches or rillettes de porc or just some good charcuterie. 13% alc.
