Flotsam & Jetsam 'Stalwart' Cinsault, South Africa 2016

There's nothing quite as satisfying a reaffirming one's own marvellous opinion and that happened when we retasted this wine at the South African 'New Wave' Tasting and it stood out as the best pound-for-pound red wine in the room, so we're doubly confident that you will love it. Since the tasting note written below, it has taken on an even softer, more Burgundian/Pinot Noir character.

This is a pale and ghostly expression of the Cinsault grape for sipping under sunny skies. It's light and easy-to-drink and what it lacks in depth, it makes up for in dimple-inducing loveliness. Ten years ago, no one in South Africa would have dared to make a red wine like this, you earned your stripes in power and heft, but today, with South Africa's younger generation of winemakers seeking refreshment instead of clout and elegance instead of bodyweight, it's almost commonplace. Don't hold onto it, drink it over the next couple of years, as it tastes so sweet and elegant right now, like a soft-bellied Pinot Noir. 12% alc. Drink now - 2019.

Jamie Goode:
"Lovely juicy, bright cherry and berry fruits are at the core of this wine, which is so fresh and juicy, but also has lovely grainy structure and a bit of pepper and ginger spice. It’s juicy and smashable, but there’s also some elegance and a hint of seriousness about it. Fine, fruity and peppery on the finish, with fine herbal notes. I really like this." 92 points
