Mature Barolo is a wonderful thing, but mature Barolo is also an expensive thing. Here's a fantastic alternative that you can enjoy in the same way as you might a serious old Barolo or Barbaresco, but without forking out silly money for it: Empty the bottle into a flat-bottomed decanter and let it breathe for an hour, while you prepare some pappardelle alla boscaiola, then pour the wine into a wide-bowled glass, but before you take a sip, hold it up to the light and take in the beautiful colour of aged Nebbiolo, a sort of shiny ox-blood tapering to pale terracotta. A couple of swirls will release mellow autumnal aromas that lead you to a palate that shows all the qualities that the even ripening season of 2007 has conferred, as well as long-ageing in large oak casks. Sweet cherries and sauteed plums meet scuffed leather, loose tea. autumn leaves and wood polish in a rich and rewardingly complex wine. Time has softened the tannins and amplified the flavours to give you a very grand experience. Gattinara sits at higher altitude than Barolo, so it can suffer from underripeness in cooler vintages, but there's not a hint of that here. Glorious stuff! 13% alc. Drink now-2025+
