Like its sibling, the Rioja Blanco, this is an absolutely beautiful modern Rioja, which looks as good as it tastes. Our wine-tasting antennae are calibrated to oscillate furiously as soon as we detect too much oak spice or too much oxidation in a Rioja and this has neither. It shows a winemaker with a really deft touch, able to bring grace notes of orange peel, purple flowers and vanilla, as well as bass notes of bing cherry, damson and the sort of soft-bodied red berry fruits that you might find more commonly in Pinot Noir, with which this wine shares a silkiness of texture. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2022

The Wine Advocate: "A blend of Tempranillo with 5% Mazuelo (aka Cariñena), the 2010 Hacienda el Ternero Reserva aged for 24 months in barrel, but it doesn't show in the aromas, which are a mixture of ripe red and black fruit with some earthy undertones. The palate is very sleek with pungent flavors that are very tasty and end with a chalky, mineral, almost salty sensation. Very good, fresh and modern Rioja. A great discovery! And the price is quite good, too. 5,607 bottles filled." 92 points

Customer comments:

"Tried the El Ternero last night - the most sleek, polished modern Rioja I've ever tasted.....needs an hour in a decanter.....really opens up with earthy undertones on the back." - Mr. G.C., October 2016
