There’s a tipping point with Pinot Noir. It either stays earthbound like a charming but flightless bird or it catches the wind and takes you on a spellbinding swoop of aroma sensations and this one definitely has the wind beneath its wings. It is a small batch cuvee made from the very first vines to be planted on Hawkshead’s estate. The difference between this and the regular bottling is quite noticeable in this vintage, as those older vines bring more aromatic complexity and fruit concentration. It’s as if the fruit and the oak are taking turns in lifting each other to the next level, swirling with strawberry, then sandalwood, cherry, then kola nut, raspberry, then cedar and so on and so on. It’s not an Otago fruit bomb, it’s more nuanced and elegant than that, veering more towards Burgundy, but with a slightly riper, sweeter mid-palate. A very seductive and beautiful wine. 13% alc. Screwcap. Drink now-2022.
