We don’t recommend giving this Moravian wine as a present, because it won’t get opened and may well end up a few weeks later with a raffle ticket sellotaped to it. That’s not an indictment on the quality of the wine itself, but people’s perception of the Czech Republic as a wine-producing country, which is a shame, because this wine is really delicious and that fictional gift recipient is really missing out.

It’s a light-bodied, super-juicy blend of Blaufrankisch and St Laurent aged for a year in neutral oak and acacia barrels, which allow the influence of the volcanic soil to shine through. It smells a bit like a Jura Pinot Noir and tastes a bit like an Etna Rosso, showing raspberry, smokey cherry, orange, pumice and flint. It’s made with minimal intervention, no artificial yeasts, no filtration and just a little sulphur at bottling. 11.5% alc. Drink now-2022
