A good Malbec should have a reassuringly deep, glossy colour and this one pours like dark crimson ink, which sets the tone, if you'll forgive the pun. There's a two-for-the-price-of-one deal on the nose with Malbec's plush blackcurrant opulence underpinned by Carmenère's leafy, claret-like earthiness. They fuse harmoniously, but you can still taste the individual characteristics of each grape variety. Where they intersect, however, is where this wine really shines in its show of cassis, black raspberry, vanilla, dark chocolate and violet fondants. The tannins are old-school, as you might find snoozing mid-afternoon at a gentleman's club. The acidity is lively, but all that saturated fruit needs energy and the tartarics, citrics, malics and lactics perform that task admirably. And lastly, a savoury edge frames the palate without sacrificing the grape’s famous sunny disposition and toothsome appeal making this a hugely pleasurable drop of wine. 14.5% alc. Drink now-2020.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson.com (Tamlyn Currin): "Black fruit and menthol with a line of smoke. The Carmènere runs a dramatically green streak through a concentration of glossy black fruit. Eucalyptus, some bitterness, and an edge of char. Comfortingly chewy tannins. Drink 2017-2021."  16 points
