NEW! JH Meyer Signature Wines 'Carbonic' Pinot Noir, South Africa 2017

19.95

When we see the word 'carbonic' on a wine label, we usually give it a wider berth than we would a mad dog, so we approached this extremely tentatively, making sure there was a spittoon close by. We took a sniff and expected to recoil at the confected, bubble-gum aromas of a young Beaujolais, where carbonic maceration is the norm, but were more than pleasantly surprised by what came out of the glass instead. Beautifully elegant aromas of grenadine, rosehip and strawberry, nothing stalky or too sweet, just the purest scent of youthful Pinot Noir and a palate full of red berry succulence, finishing with dusty redcurrants and an impression of chalky tannins, which just grip enough to stop it slipping down too fast. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2020.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson (Tamlyn Currin):
“Clear glass bottle! Charming nose of woodland strawberries and damp hedgerow – such an early-summer smell! Tangy and orange-zesty berries, smacking with juiciness. Sassy, a bite of spice, and really surprisingly elegant for carbonic maceration. (Is that just me being snobby?) This is thirst-quenching Pinot. Drink 2018-2021” 16.5 points
