Lockhart Cellars say that they don’t make “high-fivin’, chest-pumping wines” and that shows immediately in the colour of their Pinot Noir. It’s naturally pale, not one of those suspiciously opaque Californian Pinots that has spent too much time on the sun bed. It’s supple, soft and juicy with a little spice woven into the raspberry and black cherry fruit. We were taken aback by the value, especially for a premium grape variety from a region that is rarely apologetic about overcharging for its wines. Lockhart Cellars do exactly the reverse. Delicious and attractively packaged too. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2020.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson: “Fresh, minty nose with lovely delicacy of fruit – this is California in silk gloves. Very fine tannins give a light dusting all over the palate. Well-judged acidity and fresh, delicate balance. Very cannily done. Drink now-2020.” 16.5 points
