Mayer 'Close Planted' Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, Australia 2016

There's no shortage of characters in the world of wine and Timo Mayer is another colourful addition. He was born in Germany, where he still makes wine during Australia’s winter, but relocated to the Yarra Valley with his wife to pursue their viticultural dream. He owns a 6 acre plot called ‘Bloody Hill’ (so named because it’s so steep and hard to farm) and works with minimal interference in the winery and no fining or filtration. It's often said that wines reflect the character of the people who make them. This Pinot Noir is calm, restrained and subtle and, as such, couldn't be less like the bubbly, gregarious and convivial Timo Mayer!

Only 3 barrels are made, of which one is new, so only 33% new oak in total. Whole bunch fermentation (50%). Open fermenters. Densely planted. A little reticent at first, but really opens up after an hour in a decanter into something memorable. Savoury, sappy, spice bark notes weave their way through pure Pinot Noir signature flavours of cherry, redcurrant, violets and raspberry with the finest tannins imaginable. Tight, crisp and fresh now, but with ages ahead of it.  Drink now-2030.

Customer comments (previous vintage):

"One of Australia's best Pinots without a doubt. Glorious. After an hour it just sang. Left some in a glass overnight & after a swirl filled the room this morning with its sweet layered aromatics. Ethereal. An Aussie wine true to its sense of place. Age worthy too. One to try again every year for the next 5 years." - Mr. G.C., November 2016
