If you were lured to this tasting note by the name of the grape variety, Nerello Mascalese, then we can only apologise, because this isn’t the sort of wine made from Nerello Mascalese that you are probably familiar with, the pale and perfumed wines of Mount Etna. Yes, it’s the same grape variety, but it takes on a completely different character when grown inland, not on volcanic slopes, producing a richer and more full-bodied wine. It may not appeal to purists, who think Nerello must be all ethereal and Pinot-like, but while they cry into their Zalto glasses, we can all enjoy this deliciously plush and juicy red wine awash with plums, chocolate-covered raisins, new leather and sweet blueberries. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2023.
