Envinate are showing the way. T. Amarela is a fabulous new edition to their portfolio. The deep, inky colour doesn’t come from heavy extraction (in fact, the grapes were foot trodden), but from the fact that the Tinta Amarela grape (aka Trincadeira) has dark red flesh, so the rich glossy colour is natural and isn’t a sign of a winemaker aiming for powerful concentration and bodyweight, which would be completely at odds with the philosophy of Envinate’s winemakers anyway. It’s a sinewy young wine that needs more time to unfurl its full potential, but even at this tender age is a thing of great beauty. Aromas of shiny blackcurrant skins, polished black leather, crushed violets, damson, blood and black roses seem to fill the air and the palate is wonderfully fresh and glossy with a moreish blueberry acidity that demands another sip. It comes from a 15 year-old vineyard at 500 metres altitude on Spain’s western edge, close to the border with Portugal. The grapes were destemmed and underwent semi-carbonic maceration. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2028.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate: “Cropped from a warm, dry and early harvest, the 2017 T. Amarela Parcela Valdemedel was picked in early August. It's quite dark coloured and always has aromas of liquorice and Mediterranean herbs. It's an approachable and pleasant wine that's round, juicy, straightforward and very easy to drink. They did a softer vinification, and it's certainly a lighter vintage for T. Amarela. Unfortunately, this will be the last vintage for this wine. Some 2,000 bottles produced.” 92+ points
