Colour: Medium+ deep dark cherry. Aromas: Terrific nose, really stylish and unaffected and shows the hand of a confident winemaker. As if the fruit was simply encouraged to become wine of its own free will. Shiny-skinned red fruits, micro-flowers, orange peel, cranberry, broken slate and sweet cherry. Palate: Lovely sense of graphite (imagine cool pencil lead), which I’m told is particular to this vineyard, and gives a mineral backbone to the wine, elevating the fruit and lending an air of quiet sophistication, not in flavour terms like Bordeaux, but in the way it supports the other elements. Pomegranate and damson skins, grated spices, sandalwood. Beautifully supple and harmonious with a real touch of finesse, this is a fabulous vintage of 'El Rapolao'. Like a great book or album or film, it makes you want to revisit it again and again. It comes from a north-facing vineyard containing Mencía, Merenzao, Trousseau (known locally as Estaladiña), Garnacha Tintorera and Souson fermented with the stems in oak foudres and aged for one year in used barrels. It tastes amazing with roast duck while sitting next to the winemaker (Brag? Us? Never!). 13.5% alc. Drink now-2025..
