The second incarnation of the Smiley Red (‘V2’ aka Version 2) is a blend of Cinsault (40%) Mourvedre (40%) Syrah (15%) and Tinta Barocca (5%) sourced from parcels grown on various different Swartland terroirs: the Malmesbury clays, Kasteelberg schists and Paardeberg granites. It’s a blend of 3 vintages and that brings great complexity with a combination of high tone berry fruits of cranberry, raspberry coulis, redcurrant and blackberry balanced with spicy notes of smoked paprika, clove, star anise and white pepper. Mourvedre brings the tomato leaf and earthy qualities of iron and wet gravel to the forefront, which add depth and complexity to the nose. The palate is rounded, concentrated and firm yet delicate and fresh with the Cinsault adding the lift and freshness to the wine and the Syrah the spice and depth.

Press review:

Christian Eedes: “A blend of 40% Cinsault, 40% Mourvèdre and the rest Syrah and Tinta Barocca. 100% whole bunch fermented and 12.5% alcohol Very aromatic with notes of fynbos and lavender before wild strawberry, raspberry and a little black olive. Light bodied and fresh with lovely fine tannins. Extra smash able.” 91 points
