A beautiful, high-acid red wine, made from Chile's attention-grabbing grape variety, Pais, which made its way to Chile from the Canary Islands (where it is known as Listan Prieto) thanks to Spanish missionaries during the 16th Century. This example comes from unirrigated, 150 year-old bush vines, still on their original rootstock, growing on volcanic basalt soil, which confers a vivid sense of place to the pale, translucent wine. That's the nerdy stuff out of the way, so let's concentrate on why we like it! It's so juicy and fresh, with blood orange, cherry skins, rhubarb and sweet raspberry with a very light woodiness from the barrels, which are made from a native Chilean wood, called rauli. Its easy and light, without being frivolous, and stimulates both palate and mind in the manner of a racy Pinot Noir. 12% alc. Drink now-2020. Suitable for vegans.
