Planetes Familia Nin-Ortiz, Priorat, Spain 2015

38.00

This fantastic blend of Garnacha and Cariñena has a broad sweep of aromas including blackcurrant pastilles, tamarind, rose petals, wet ink and something exotic wafting in from the souk. We preferred this to their two top wines the Nit de Nin Mas d’en Caçador and the Nit de Nin Coma d’en Romeu, which go for twice the price of this beauty. It holds its weight beautifully, with an inner perfume that infiltrates the dark and silky depths of the palate. Even at £38.00 a bottle, this must surely be one of the best value wines in Spain. 14.5% alc. Drink now-2022.

Press reviews:

The Wine Advocate: “The amazing 2015 Planetes de Nin is a young-vine blend of Garnacha and Cariñena that fermented in 3,200-litre French oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a 3,000-litre oak vat for some 18 months. It starts as a closed and serious red, with great detail, poise and elegance, incredibly fresh for the conditions of the year, challenging the 2014 with freshness. It's fresh and mineral, elegant and perfumed, floral and nicely balanced on the palate. This has to be the finest Planetes to date. Bravo!” 95 points

Jancis Robinson: “The wine is sourced from sloped vineyards of Garnatxa (Grenache) and Carinyena (Carignan), from relatively young vines. Long fermentation and maceration in large oak casks (four weeks' skin contact). 18 months' ageing in large foudres. The wine has a ripe aspect showing plums, juicy dark berries, cloves and an enchanting earthiness. The palate is really delicate, tannins are present but refined, and it leaves a very rounded impression. It is a subtle and charming wine, with a very good texture. 14.5% alc. Drink 2017-2022.” 17 points
