'Retromarcia' Chianti Classico, Monte Bernardi, Tuscany, Italy 2016

Wow! Beautiful floral overtones sweeten and lift the deeper Tuscan tones of sour cherry, terracotta and leather in this sensational Chianti Classico, which leaves most others in its wake and could easily sit alongside many a Brunello without getting an inferiority complex (I have an inferiority complex, but it’s not a very good one). It’s lithe and sinewy on the palate, an exercise in fingerprint flavours held perfectly in the softest of grasps. Ravishing fruit, beautifully expressed - we are smitten.! 13.5% alc. Drink now-2024.

Press review:

JancisRobinson.com: “100% Sangiovese. Aged in large oak casks and concrete tanks for 18 months. Light cherry with a bluish tint. Scented and elegant, subtle. Extra-fine tannins, slightly peppery on the finish. Really moreish, with a long, dry, fine aftertaste and no heat. Mouth-watering finish. Drink now-2028.” 17 points (Julia Harding)

JancisRobinson.com: "Real concentration on the nose, and gorgeous racy raspberry palate with bags of crunchy tannins. Dances on the palate. Drink now-2024.” 17.5 points (Walter Speller)

Decanter: “This biodynamically farmed Sangiovese is designed to be an everyday, unheavy, pure Chianti Classico like the old-timers used to make. It is oak aged but you’d never know, so clear and transparent is its fruit.” 92 points

Wine Enthusiast: “This fragrant red offers heady scents of ripe dark-skinned berry, pressed violet, eucalyptus and a potpourri of culinary spice. The refined palate is initially understated but then sneaks up on you with ripe wild cherry, cranberry, liquorice and clove. It's surprisingly fresh for such a hot, dry vintage and balanced, with firm, refined tannins. Drink through 2025.” 92 points
