It's quite light in colour, as you might expect of a Rosso di Montalcino, recipient of hand-me-down fruit from its more muscular older brother, Brunello, but the flavours, although lacking depth, have a real honesty and integrity, revealing Sangiovese Grosso's elegant side. Although it's weaker than its sibling, it shows no signs of having an inferiority complex, capitalising on its charm to seduce rather than its brawn. The aromas are subtle, but true to the grape and true to Tuscany, suggesting wild cherries, chestnut, tobacco leaf and warm terracotta. This is Sangiovese stripped back, without make-up, revealing its natural flavours. A very well-groomed wine, cut to fit the cloth it has been given. 14% alc. Drink now-2022.

Press review:

The Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino offers zesty and focused aromas that are absolutely specific to Sangiovese. The wine's varietal purity sings loudest with singular tones of cherry, grilled herb, licorice and medicinal herb. The wine's mid-weight texture is soothing, accessible and food friendly." 89 points
