Sadie Family Wines 'Columella' Swartland, South Africa 2016

“Very impressive.” - Neal Martin

The best vintage of Columella to date and, yes, folks, we’ve tried them all. It’s the most composed vintage that Eben Sadie has made and Eben is indeed a composer. He creates wine in his mind, like a musician imagining a score, except he uses Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault not crotchets, semibreves and minims. The 2016 is so sleek and pure that it feels almost European (the 85% whole cluster fermentation may account for that in part). It’s wonderfully appetising, a food wine for sure, seducing you softy with the glossy sheen of its dark cherry fruit, seasoned with black pepper, violets and cold soil and the tannins are as immaculately manicured as a Swartland bowling green (which, by coincidence, is where we last saw Eben Sadie). In short, this is a great South African wine that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest and, in that context, is genuinely inexpensive. 13.5% alc. Drink 2020-2035.

Press reviews:

Tim Atkin MW: "“I’m not scared of time,” says Eben Sadie, “because if you are, you’re afraid of structure in your wines.” This Columella bears him out. Blending Syrah with smaller amounts of Mourvèdre, Tinta Barocca, Cinsault and Grenache, it’s not a particularly powerful wine at 13.5% but has incredible focus and energy, with a backbone of sinewy tannins, plenty of texture and a lot more to give in bottle. 2024-2035.” 97 points
