Schubert Syrah, Wairarapa, New Zealand 2007

This is a fully mature Syrah, so please approach it with all due respect for its age. The corks are hard to extract, but if you persevere, there's a wonderful wine waiting for you inside. It's like a grand old Cote-Rotie in its evocations of peppery blueberries, cherry-soaked wood and middle-eastern spices. The mellowness of age is invigorated by some lovely bright fruit still present. Drink this with a big Sunday roast and pretend you spent £100 on a great vintage Hermitage. Your tastebuds will be none the wiser. Drink now.

The Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Syrah spent 25 months in oak, 40% new. Deep garnet in color, it is intensely peppery with an undercurrent of red berry/blackberry aromas plus some loam and sandalwood. Full bodied with generous spicy fruit supported a medium level of very fine tannins and refreshing acid, the finish is very spicy. Drink it now to 2016. 197 cases were made." 91 points
