Stonecroft Syrah Reserve, Gimblett Gravels, New Zealand 2013

Founded in the early 80s by Doctor Alan Limmer, Stonecroft was the first vineyard to commercially plant Syrah in New Zealand. Having found the first plants in a research station based in the Northern part of the country which was closing down, Dr Limmer decided to rescue the vines and plant them. He later went on to give access to nurseries for cutting, making Stonecroft the unique source of all early Syrah planting in New Zealand.

The vineyard was acquired in 2010 and is now in the very capable hands of former Londoners Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin following Dr Limmer’s retirement. They are both dedicated to pursue the legacy and philosophy of the estate by producing wine with great purity of fruit and elegance. The 10ha are worked by hand with two vineyards being organic and a third one in conversion. Long recognised for being one of the best areas for producing high quality wine, with warm summers and excellent free draining soil, Gimblett Gravels is perfectly suited for the production of Syrah. Stonecroft is taking advantage of these natural conditions to produce wines which express the terroir, and are compared by many to the best Syrahs of the Northern Rhône.

"This is a very serious Syrah indeed" 98 points, The Wine Companion

The Wine Companion (James Halliday) "Deep, dense, ripe Syrah that’s jam-packed with dried fruits/Christmas cake, spice/black pepper/anise, liquorice, and dark chocolate flavours. Firmly structured red with impressive cellaring potential. This is a very serious Syrah indeed from a great site, old vines and an outstanding vintage." 98 points

Decanter (Philip Tuck MW): "Attractive lift and extract with pure, spicy black fruit and oak. There is a generosity allied to excellent palate structure that is impressive." 19 out of 20 pointsDecanter (Melanie Brown): "Bright, aromatic fruits and bubblegum notes coming through: dark, spicy and rich. Enticing silky texture and wonderful balance; charming." 18.5 out of 20 points

Decanter (Christine Parkinson):  "Liquorice, truffle and cola along with cherry and blackcurrant fruit. The palate is layered and creamy with plenty of oak, but the fruit shines through. Juicy, generous, suave and sophisticated." 18.5 out of 20 points
