This beautiful Greek red has a Barolo-like appearance in the glass and that sends the suggestible mind off into thoughts of Piedmont in autumn, truffles and foggy hills, which isn’t entirely wistful, because this Xinomavro comes from vineyards at over 1,800 feet above sea level, which see snow in winter and fog in autumn. Like Nebbiolo, Xinomavro is a tannic grape variety, which Apostolos Thymiopoulos has ‘tamed’ through a slow and gentle maceration and ageing in large oak barrels (again, similar to traditional Barolo), allowing the flavours to emerge without the raucous interruption of hard and bitter tannins. In fact, this is an extremely elegant wine, a cool climate red with a relatively light alcohol content of 12.5% abv and high-toned, sweet cherry aromas (still can’t get away from that Barolo idea!) and a mellow, fruitful palate of rosehip, tomato, loose tea and turned soil. If you are having roast lamb for dinner, we’ve already done the matchmaking for you. Biodynamic. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2025. 100% Xinomavro (Pronounced Casino Mavro).

Fun with pronunciation: If you want to say ‘Spice Girls’ with a Scottish accent, say ‘Space Ghettos’ with an American accent.

Jancis Robinson MW: “New wine from the highest vineyard in the appellation. Lifted nose and more polish than the Jeunes Vignes – but a bit more mainstream and richer. Sweet fruit grown on schist and granite. Drink 2020-2025.” 16.5 points
