Let's be honest, Chile wouldn't come high on most peoples' list if asked to name a cutting-edge wine-producing country. Whether true or unjust, the perception is that Chile makes wines that are defined by varietal character first, brand second and terroir nowhere. So, we had fairly low expectations when we tried this Syrah, although the groovy abstract label did make us wonder if there was some creativity afoot. We were pleasantly surprised to find a wine packed with character that seemed to be trying to say something about its origins. The nose has a touch of reduction, revealing charred blueberries, ink wells and woodsmoke, but it blows away after a few minutes and reveals a palate rich in dark fruits, tamarind, crushed rock and a juicy blackcurrant tang. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2020.

Winemaking
Husband and wife, Roberto Carrancá and Javiera Fuentes started a small scale, garage winery located at their house in the historic heart of Algarrobo. They work sustainably, aiming to balance inputs and outputs, applying modern oenological knowledge and traditional winemaking techniques, to make what they call ‘negawatt’ or zero energy wines. Grapes are carefully handpicked and destemmed before undergoing semi-carbonic fermentation in 800 litre vats and concrete eggs. Wines are racked off, and aged for two years in renovated 225 litre barrels, before
bottling without fining or filtration.
