Viano Cabernet Sauvignon, Contra Costa County, California 2012

13.95

If you enjoy a good claret, but sometimes wish there was a little more fruit ripeness without sacrificing the wine’s gentle bodyweight and its modest alcohol content, then this is the wine for you, because it manages to have supple, ripe, sun-kissed fruit, yet framed within a medium body and an alcohol volume of just 13%.

We actually have a customer to thank for introducing us to this wine, which adds a note of nostalgia to the aromas and flavours whenever we drink it, but even accounting for that cognitive bias, it's still a seriously good bargain. Soft, mellow fruit, enlivened by blackcurrant, fleshed out with plum and graced by notes of terracotta and tomato leaf, it's sweetly succulent, as one would expect from the sunshine state, but there's also a marine-like, mineral quality that calls to mind the oyster-shell aromas of Saint Julien and the graphite cool of Saint Estephe. And all for £12.95! Phenomenally good value. 13% alc. 8 months in French and American oak. Drink now-2020.

Jancis Robinson: "Full, rich nose - truly sun-ripened. There is even a hint of tomato. Viano have had vineyards here since 1888. Sandy soils and third generation winemakers. Sweet and spicy but with local grunt."
