Extraordinary stuff from a vineyard planted 150 years ago. Due to a high sand content in the soil, it escaped the phylloxera crisis that devastated Europe's vineyards in the late 19th Century, so these are some of the rarest vines in the World, still on their original rootstock. The grape variety is Tannat and its thick, dark skins produce deep-coloured wines, which look more like crimson ink than wine. The aromas are fabulous, rich and opulent, with sensual, floral high tones and thumping bass tones, not wholly unlike a blockbuster Pomerol. You might expect such a big-proportioned wine to weigh in with a hefty alcohol content, but the heft comes from the low yields (only 5 bunches per vine) not excess sugar, so it tips the scales at a pleasing 13.5% alc. Drink  now-2035.
