Summer was invented so that people had a season for drinking this in. It's a seriously delicious 'pet nat' (i.e. petillant naturel or naturally sparkling wine), which was a bit of an accident. Gary Mills set out to make a rosé from Cabernet Franc, but the fermentation stuck, so he bottled it under crown cap and the wine refermented in bottle, taking on a lovely gentle spritz. The fact that it began life as a red wine and was aged in old puncheon barrels adds a wonderful vinous richness and savouriness without sacrificing the fun factor. There's so much more to get your tastebuds into than you would find in a pink Prosecco or Cremant de Loire rosé, caressing the palate in strawberries, rhubarb, rosehip, sweet wood and blackcurrant leaf. Lucia and I both wrote the same exclamation in our tasting books: "Wow!" It's so good that you will pray for an Indian summer, so that you can keep on enjoying it even when the clocks go back. 12.6% alc. Drink now. NB the wine may be slightly cloudy, as it was unfiltered, and may throw a natural sediment.
