NEW! Mullineux Straw Wine, Swartland, South Africa 2017 (37.5cl)

One of the great sweet wine treasures of the world, this is a stunning Chenin Blanc straw wine that contains some botrytised fruit and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as scrumdiddlyumptious. On the dessert wine scale it sits somewhere between a light Sauternes and a rich Tokaji and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as yummalicious! It's an epiphany of apricots (ooooh!) a maelstrom of marmalades (oooooooh!) and a cornucopia of confectioneries (oooooooh!). Indulgently rich, yet rivetingly acidulated, it's the perfect way to round off a meal with cheese or pud. It is only made in tiny quantities and the vintage sells out soon after release, so grab some while you can. 9.5% alc. 37.5cl. Drink now-2035.

Press review:

Neal Martin: “The 2017 Straw Wine comes from two vineyards picked at 22 to 23 Balling and laid out beneath trees at the Roundstone winery, where it dried for three weeks. It was matured for 11 months in neutral oak with around 310gm/L residual sugar and 11 gm/L total acidity. It has a very pure nose of honey, mango, quince and tangerine - very perfumed as usual. The palate is well balanced and strangely, the first facet you perceive is actually the acidity rather than the sweetness. This is very tangy, perhaps fresher than recent vintages, with a persistent, effervescent finish. Drink 2019-2035.” 94 points
