NEW! Mullineux Straw Wine, Swartland, South Africa 2015 (37.5cl)

27.95

One of the great sweet wine treasures of the world, this is a stunning Chenin Blanc straw wine that contains some botrytised fruit and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as scrumdiddlyumptious. On the dessert wine scale it sits somewhere between a light Sauternes and a rich Tokaji and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as yummalicious! It's an epiphany of apricots (ooooh!) a maelstrom of marmalades (oooooooh!) and a cornucopia of confectioneries (oooooooh!). Indulgently rich, yet rivetingly acidulated, it's the perfect way to round off a meal with cheese or pud. It is only made in tiny quantities and the vintage sells out soon after release, so grab some while you can. 10% alc. 37.5cl. Drink now-2027.

Decanter Magazine: "There's quite a savoury note to this sweet dessert wine, where all the elements are in equilibrium thanks to great finesse from the high-toned lemon acidity. It delivers beautifully honeyed aromas and real focus and power of sweet quince fruit, rich and luscious marmalade characters and a hinto of mushroom on the finish. Will age beautifullly for many years. 10% alc. Drink 2017-2030."

Jancis Robinson: "An old favourite that never disappoints and seems to be delicious even in extreme youth. Deep coppery gold. Intensely and brilliantly sweet but kept vital by enormously refreshing vibrancy. Like tarte Tatin juice. Just 10% alcohol."

The Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Straw Wine (if you are looking for the 2014, it was not produced) is 100% Chenin Blanc as usual from schist and granite soils, although Andrea Mullineux pointed out that they look at the bunches as they need to avoid rot, whilst the bunches cannot be too small as they shrivel into not much. Delivering around 290 grams per liter of residual sugar, it has a generous clear honey, marzipan, almond and quince scented bouquet that is well defined. The palate is beautifully balanced, the acidity slicing through the viscous honeyed fruit, leaving a sense of freshness in the mouth that leaves you desiring more. One of the most elegant straw wines produced so far by Chris and Andrea." 94 points
