It’s said that if you scratch a communist, you find a fascist underneath and if you scratch a fascist, you end up in hospital. Scratching beneath the surface is something we do after we have tasted a wine, so as not to bias our judgement, and it often yields interesting results. Here’s a case in point. We loved this wine as soon as it met our tastebuds, it just had that touch of sophistication that you can’t quite put your finger on, an elegance and a harmony of elements, but when we dug a little deeper afterwards, we found out that the winemaker used to work at Kongsgaard, California’s nec plus ultra Chardonnay estate (one of only 3 Californian estates to receive 100 points for their Chardonnay), so something must have rubbed off. Quite a lot by the taste of it.

There’s an ineffability about high quality wines that has you reaching for platitudes and words drained of meaning through repetition like ‘classy’ and ‘stylish’, but they used to carry some weight before they became trite and I’m reclaiming them here, because this Albarino is hard to describe in words other than to say it’s very classy and stylish. You’ll see what we mean when you taste it in the same way you know the difference between a gentleman’s cologne and Old Spice or mahogany and medium-density fibreboard. 13% alc. Drink now-2020.
