Alberto Nanclares 'A Graña' Albariño, Rias Baixas, Spain 2017

An absolutely stunning, single vineyard Albariño from the humble but brilliant Alberto Nanclares. It’s fermented in chestnut casks, which is traditional in Rias Baixas, and the wood influence is more mellow than is often the case with oak. Nanclares knows how to coax not only flavour, but also energy out of the Albariño grape and that really shows here in the wine’s concentration, minerality and length. It’s a serious wine, one you should definitely try instead of the usual fine wine suspects.

Press review:

Jancis Robinson
: "Single vineyard Albariño, fermented in old chestnut 800-litre cask. Smoky and spicy on the nose. Some smoky reduction. Terrific intensity and high acidity but all in balance even though it is mouth-wateringly crisp. Great tension in the heart of lovely fruit – herbal notes and ripest of citrus flavour. The Wine Advocate:
"The 2017 A Graña shows the style of the initial 2016, with perhaps more integrated acidity even though the analysis is very similar. The perception is of a very balanced wine, with very integrated acidity, and the wine feels very harmonious. This is a real discovery, a serious, mineral-driven Albariño that may remind you of a dry German Riesling. I have the feeling these wines are going to develop beautifully in bottle. Drink now-2024.” 93 points
