Alheit 'La Colline' Vineyard, Franschhoek, South Africa 2016

Sourced from one of the oldest Semillon vineyards in South Africa, this is an homage to the Cape's great bounty of old vine material that is being rediscovered and preserved by a new generation of heritage-conscious winemakers. It's also a great drink.

As is typical of the Cape’s older Semillon vineyards, there are some Semillon Gris vines planted among the Semillon Blanc and, as this rarity is virtually extinct in the rest of the world, it makes this a uniquely South African wine. It's also a great drink.

The flavours are simply stunning, like drinking spun gold. Earth and sun and fruit in cosmic harmony. Yup, it's so good it makes you say ridiculous things like that. Lemon drizzle cake, lime zest and nashi pear vie with warm hay, porridge oats and honey. A stellar wine, which Chris Alheit self-effacingly claims is made in the vineyard and that he barely has to do anything other than not mess it up.

Press review:

Decanter: "A tautly-coiled, waxy white peach-scented, co-fermented field blend of 81 year-old Semillon Blanc with Semillon Gris. A fine-lined and precise wine that will suit long-term keeping. 13% alc. Drink now-2026." 96 points
