Alheit Vineyards 'Fire by Night' Chenin Blanc, Paardeberg, South Africa 2017

“I don’t know how to make a better Paardeberg wine than this” says Chris Alheit, which is quite a statement, given that the Paardeberg is more like a holy site than a vineyard for many of Swartland’s winemakers. It’s the famous rocky outcrop of decomposed granite that is farmed by local heroes like Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst and Craig Hawkins. The 2017 ‘Fire By Night’ shows classic Paardeberg characteristics of richness and minerality in equal abundance. Pear, mango, fynbos, green plum, lime juice and thatching straw. A beautiful wine named after an episode in The Bible where God provides a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night to show the Israelites the way during their exodus from Egypt. Chris tried to capture his own feelings of isolation, loss, direction and purpose on the label. 13% alc. Fermented in cement eggs. Drink now-2030.

Greg Sherwood MW: “Bright, crystalline and intense, wonderfully taut and intense, loaded with liquid minerals, limestone and greengage, green apple and white pears. Pithy phenolic notes, a spicy pear purée expression and such clarity and focus. Mouth-watering acidity, this wine tells an amazing story and delivers on so many levels with great subtlety.” 95+ points
