Amares Chardonnay, Elgin, South Africa 2014

13.95

Another cracking 'limited release' wine from Amares, made by the hugely talented Matthew van Heerden, previously the winemaker at Uva Mira (South Africa's highest-rated Chardonnay). In this case, only 5 barrels were produced, which barely counts as a commercial release and is closer to a home brew!

Most of the famous Cape Chardonnays come from Stellenbosch, Constantia or Hermanus, so when Matthew raved about a special vineyard he had found in Elgin, everyone thought he had lost his marbles. However, he has proved his doubters wrong. Given the quality of the juice, the expertise of the winemaker and the tiny production, this is a real bargain for £13.95. The cool climate Elgin fruit (higher and closer to the Ocean than Stellenbosch) expresses itself in notes of apple, nectarine and white pear, brushed with a tiny hint of pastry cream from the minimal oak ageing. A very classy white wine with a lightness of touch that would outclass many a similarly-priced Chardonnay from the northern hemisphere. Try it instead of a lightly-oaked Macon Villages, you'll have much more fun. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2020.

Customer comment:

"Thanks for dropping off the Amares. Had a bottle last night. Either it caught me at a weak moment and decided to exploit it mercilessly or I'm a closet chardonnay fanatic after all. Either way it was absolutely delicious. Definitely on the back seat of the fun bus!" - Mr R.H. April 2016
