B Vintners 'Strandwolf' Chardonnay, Stellenbosch 2014

19.95

This is a very exciting new venture from cousins Bruwer and Gavin Raats and chimes with the philosophy of the top South African estates for seeking out 'heritage vineyards' and proudly expressing the quality of the fruit. Eben Saide has to take credit for beginning this movement, forcibly twisting the heads of South Africa's winemakers away from Europe and forcing them to see what was always there in front of them, some of the finest long-established vineyards in the world.

While Eben Sadie is making giant strides in the Swartand with his 'Old Vine Series' (please enquire if interested), Bruwer and Gavin Raats are focusing their efforts on Stellenbosch, which is home to some equally fine, old vine fruit. Their Strandwolf Chardonnay is a humdinger! It eschews oak in favour of finely chiselled, terroir-driven fruit and is a great buy at £19.95.

The Wine Advocate: "The idea behind the 2014 Strandwolf Chardonnay is that it comes from a part of the vineyard with a homogeneous soil type. It has a complex bouquet with lemon rind, incense, a touch of petrol and hazelnut. It is very well defined and cerebral. The palate is beautifully defined. There is such an engaging texture here, very detailed with a touch of nuttiness towards the elegant finish that is reminiscent of a fine Meursault. Indeed, this is very Burgundy-like, perhaps just the long lime-tinged finish giving its origin away. At 12.5% alcohol, there is a pleasing coolness and drinkability to this outstanding Chardonnay. Alas, there are just 900 bottles produced." 93 points
