Blends are experimental by their very nature and the factors that lead to their success can just as easily be the same factors that lead to their demise if the variables change (vintage conditions, winemaking decisions etc). Once in a while, all the elements align perfectly and that seems to have happened in 2014 with this remarkable white wine, a blend of Chardonnay and Macabeu, where all the Chardonnay was aged in new oak, whereas the Macabeu spent equal time in new oak and stainless steel and that decision, along with countless others (picking date, fermentation temperatures, yeast strains etc) seems to have paid amazing dividends.

If you like tangy, barrel-fermented white Burgundy, especially the mineral-inflected whites of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey or Coche-Dury then you will be more than a little amused by this, especially at the price. The aromas are serious! Waft this under a Burgundy-lovers nose and watch them soliloquise and gesticulate as they extol the unique majesty of the Cote d'Or and its terroir. The palate scintillates with struck flint, sour honey, lime marmalade and grapefruit peel and the citrus fruit character works in perfect harmony with the oak, lifting it and giving the tangy bite that it needs to make you crave another sip. It might be a work of genius or a wonderful fluke, but who cares, because it's absolutely delicious. 13% alc. Drink now-2020
